Great Valley Captures League Title; Mellott and Minor Shine in Championship Meet
PERKIOMEN VALLEY, PA – The 1989 Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC) Track & Field Championship at Perkiomen Valley High School showcased top-tier performances, with Great Valley (125 points) edging out Pottstown (109 points) to claim the team title. Phoenixville rounded out the top three with 71 points in a highly competitive meet.
Leading the charge on the track was Phil Mellott (Owen J. Roberts), who turned in a dominant distance performance, winning the 800m (1:57.9), 1600m (4:18.6), and 3200m (9:50.2). His endurance and consistency made him a clear winner for Meet MVP.
In the sprints, Chris Minor (Phoenixville) proved unstoppable, capturing the 100m (10.8) and 200m (22.5) titles, breaking his previous meet records, while also anchoring Phoenixville’s victorious 4x100m relay (44.1).
The hurdles saw a tight battle, with Paul Hadzor (Great Valley, 15.0) edging out Scott Helverson (Spring-Ford, 15.0) i the 110m hurdles title, while Helverson went on to win the 300m hurdles (40.3), solidifying his place as one of the top all-around athletes.
On the field, Greg Faulkner (Spring-Ford) made a statement in the shot put (51’5.5″), with a meet record throw. Meanwhile, Jim Ford-Bey (Great Valley, 41’9.25″) narrowly edged out Mike Gleason (Spring-Ford, 41’9″) in an exciting triple jump showdown. Gleason was able to win the long jump (meet record, 20’4.75) and contribute points in the high jump (5th).
With fierce competition across all events, this year’s PAC championship proved to be a true showcase of talent, grit, and determination. Whether it was Mellott’s endurance, Minor’s speed, or Gleason’s jumping, each athlete left their mark on the league’s history.
